After Startrucking ’75 turned an ambitious idea into an expensive education, punk arrived at exactly the right moment. The established business was suspicious of the music, the artists were suspicious of the established business, and I was available.

Illegal Records, Step Forward, independent singles, Sniffin’ Glue, Urgh! A Music War, and the early new-wave network all demonstrated the same rule: when the gatekeepers do not understand the audience, the gate becomes less important than they think.
